Litter
Control and Recycling
Wise
County provides a comprehensive litter prevention and recycling
program that focuses on changing attitudes and behaviors
about proper trash handling. An affiliate of
Keep America Beautiful, Inc., our program is organized
and implemented by Keep
Wise County Beautiful and its Executive Coordinator/Litter
Control Officer Greg Cross.
KWCB is involved in planning, youth education, public communications,
law enforcement, recycling and cleanup. All of these
elements are essential to reduce littering and increase
recycling.
Keep
Wise County Beautiful offers numerous opportunities
for volunteer involvement. Its executive committee
meets the fourth Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at Western
Steer in Norton. Subcommittees and task forces meet
as needed. Annual events include:
- Chipping of
the Greens,
- Great American
Cleanup,
- Appliance
Recycling Roundup,
- Household
Hazardous Waste Collection Day, and
- Paint-A-Can
Events for Wise Fall Fling and Best Friend Festival.
KWCB also coordinates
an office paper collection program and organizes community
recycling drop-off centers.
Numerous school activities are also coordinated annually
by KWCB, such as:
- The Great
Aluminum Can Roundup,
- Trash Treasures
Contest,
- Telephone
Book Recycling Contest,
- Keep Wise
County Clean Poster Contest,
- Krunchoff,
- School Recognition
Contest, and
- School Beautification
Contest.
KWCB also offers
classroom and assembly presentations on litter, recycling
and water pollution.
KWCB also works with the Guest River Watershed Restoration
Project and the Upper Powell River Watershed Restoration
Project, focusing on education, publicity and illegal dump
removal. An outdoor classroom at Toms Creek in Coeburn
offers numerous educational opportunities for the schools.
Even if you don't have the time to assist with a community
event, you can still help to reduce littering in Wise County
by reporting people who litter. If you see someone
littering from a vehicle, you may report the incident to
the
Keep Wise County Beautiful by calling (276) 328-1000.
Write down the license plate number and the type of vehicle
as well as the date, time and place of the offense. To assist you in reporting violators and litterbugs, Litter Control has developed a form for you to keep in your car. You can download it Here.
Recycling is an activity that you and your family can do
at home. Recycling not only saves landfill space, but also
provides a way to reuse precious natural resources.
